Johnson's Shut-ins

An hour's drive from east Eminence is Johnson's Shut-ins State Park, one of the crown jewels of the Missouri State Park System. This area has two shut-in areas with Bluff all around. The Shut-ins has some of the best swimming holes in the state and very nice camping and picnic facilities.

Climbing is allowed WITH PERMIT AND HELMET after Labor day and before Memorial Day. Contact the park office about how to get a permit and other regulations climbers must follow.

Johnson's Shut-Ins is located in the Southeast Region of Missouri off of Highway 21 on N highway. It is also near another Top 10 Attraction, Elephant Rock State Park. While you are in the area, don't neglect to visit Taum Sauk Mountain State Park containing the highest point in Missouri and the Taum Sauk Electric Dam. This dam was created by taking the top off a mountain and hollowing it out like a bowl. A small interprative demonstration is can be seen at the main office.
